Introduction
We are sharing a series of messages themed Jesus Is. We need to know who Jesus is and study his teachings. We can apply what he teaches us and avoid the tricks and traps of the devil by studying Jesus in the scriptures.
Jesus is the best example of how we should live, work, and relate to others. We must make it a habit of reading his teachings, praying, and listening for his voice as we go about our day doing what the Lord has created and equipped us for and called us to do.
Today we are going to talk about how Jesus is The Prince of Peace. We read Jesus referred to as the Prince of Peace in Isaiah 9:6 while reading the prophecy of the coming savior.
Isaiah 9:6
(6) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Jesus is the Prince of Peace.
We all need to have peace in our lives. I am not talking about the absence of war or conflict with others. The peace we all need to have in our lives is an internal peace in our hearts. This is a peace that often seems out of place. It leads to being calm when everything around you is in chaos. The peace that Jesus gives us is full of the assurance that we know why we are here and where we are going.
There are three areas we will focus on today; peace in relationships, peace in life, and peace in knowing our eternal future. The peace Jesus brings us restores relationships.
Jesus Restores Relationships
The peace that Jesus brings restores relationships between people, groups, and humanity with God. Division is one of the devil’s chief tools to keep people from returning to God. It is also how he continues to maintain control over people and situations. The devil divides.
We have spoken before about the importance of communication. We must communicate openly and honestly to keep from drifting apart. This is true with friendships, marriages, and even business and political relationships. Open and honest communication can only take place when Jesus is a part of it.
I was introduced to a married couple many years ago. The husband said that his wife was his first and third wife. They had been married once and then divorced. The man married again and divorced and then remarried his first wife. They had both found the Lord and accepted Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. Their relationship was healed by the peace that Jesus brought into each of their hearts.
Mankind of all backgrounds that are not Jews have been reconciled to God and reunited with our Jewish brothers and sisters through the birth, life, and sacrifice of the Savior, our Messiah, Jesus Christ. It is through Jesus, who fulfilled every prophecy of the coming Savior that we are reunited, for Jesus did not come to just save the Jews, but to save the world.
Let’s read Ephesians 2:11-16
Ephesians 2:11-16
(11) Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)— (12) remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. (13) But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (14) For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, (15) by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, (16) and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
The peace Jesus brings reconciles us all together and reconciles us back to God. That is the chief reason Jesus came. He paid the price and fulfilled the law so that we could return to God cleansed from our sin and unrighteousness.
Jesus Balances Life
Jesus also brings us a much-needed balance to our lives with his peace. It is not healthy to be so singularly focused that you miss other things going on around you. There must be a balance between work and life. Moderation is key to most aspects of life. Too much of anything, even a good thing, is not always healthy.
God created the sabbath when he created the heavens and the earth. After 6 days of creation, God rested and set aside the seventh day for a day of rest. This is a great example that we must rest, regularly. There is always something that needs to be done, and God knows this. He has created all of us to work together to accomplish his goals while we are here on earth. None of us has been singled out to be the one person to do it all. We must give others the opportunity to serve also.
When we do not rest, we burn ourselves out. We must continue to feed our souls with prayer, reading the scriptures, and service, in balance. This balance is achieved through the humility and peace of Jesus Christ.
Let’s read Matthew 28:11-30
Matthew 11:28-30
(28) “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (29) Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (30) For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Our work and life balance can only be achieved with the peace of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Prince of Peace and he teaches us that his burden is light and his tasks are easy. If what you are doing for the Lord is causing you too much stress and making you worry, you have taken on things yourself. Jesus has not tasked you with those. Trust Jesus to call you and equip you. Don’t take on more than he asks you to do or equips you to do.
Jesus Assures Our Eternal Future
There must be more to life than this. We have all heard people who do not know Jesus say this when referring to their life. They hope there is more to this life and that there is something more than just dying and ceasing to exist. There is!
Jesus assures us of our salvation and our eternal future as co-heirs with him in Heaven with God. Let’s read John 14:23-29.
John 14:23-29
(23) Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. (24) Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. (25) “All this I have spoken while still with you. (26) But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (27) Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (28) “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. (29) I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.
If you are worried about where you spend eternity, let the Prince of Peace relieve you of that worry. The blessed hope of salvation and eternity with God is assured through the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. You must merely accept his sacrifice, acknowledge that he is the Son of God and ask him to be your Lord and Savior.
Allow the peace that surpasses all understanding to fill your heart and release the built-up worry and stress that comes from the enemy of your soul.
Conclusion
Jesus is the Prince of Peace. He is the one who can deliver you from all anxiety, fear, and worry. Jesus’ peace can restore your broken relationships. Studying Jesus’ teachings and allowing His peace to fill your heart will help you balance your life so that the storms of this world cannot shake you. Most of all, the peace that Jesus brings to your heart allows you to know for sure that you have a place at the table of God as a son or daughter and co-heir with Jesus himself. Jesus is the Prince of Peace and you can have that peace in your heart and life. Just ask him.
