When the power goes out in my apartment I always make sure I have a flashlight available so I can see and not be a stumbling mess that runs into everything I come across. That light gives me that comfort and assurance that I can still get around and do what needs to get done. That flashlight is my light in the darkness. And in the Bible Jesus said that we are to be the light.
Matthew 5:14-16 NIV
You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they would see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.
In Genesis when God created the sun, moon and stars, He created them to be “lights in the sky to light the world.” Genesis 1:17 NLT He made them to be lights in the darkness. And like our shining examples in the sky, and that flashlight I use when my power goes out, we too are supposed to be lights.
We are the light of the world. What a calling! Not to be scared and hidden but to be bold in our actions and be the example. The standard isn’t how loud, boisterous or noticeable you are, but what you do and the motivation behind it.
Do I want to be known as the most selfish person people know? Or do I want to be that person known for my good deeds. Not only good deeds done with selfish motivation but for the glory of my Father in Heaven.
