There is an ever-increasing need for truth in the world today. We are being swayed right and left and what most of us want to know is what is true and what is false. We want to do the right thing and we want peace and fulfillment but the world continues to try and manipulate and deceive people.
Today we are talking about the need for truth and it has two aspects. The first aspect is for leaders and the second aspect is for all believers.
The world would like us to believe that truth is subjective. In other words, truth for you may not be the same as truth for me. This is modern society trying to justify philosophies that they wish were the case but are not.
Truth is defined as a noun meaning:
There isn’t any room for interpretation with that. Truth is fact and is indisputable. The world has thrown out that definition though. The world wants us to believe we all have our own truth. We will agree that we all have our own unique perspectives, but truth is truth and is not subject to a perspective. This has led to a world that sees no limits and no boundaries. The world says there is no absolute right and wrong and you can do what you like if you don’t harm or negatively impact anyone else.
Truth is not subject to personal interpretation. This definition is crucial in today’s world where relativism is on the rise. Relativism undermines the very concept of truth, leading to a society without absolutes. This understanding of truth needs to be the cornerstone of our faith and our teachings.
The world has embraced this thought many times over the centuries. Often this precedes a great fall of a civilization. Please don’t misunderstand us. We are not preaching against freedom and liberty. What we are saying is there is absolute truth, and the world today says there is not, it is subjective. In short, the world has cast off all restraint; anything goes.
Proverbs 29:18 says:
(18) Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom's instruction. (NIV)
You may be more familiar with the King James version which says:
(18) Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. (KJV)
We all can agree that the world has a need for truth.
People cast off restraint or perish where there is no revelation or vision. That’s where the world is today. There are many people out there trying to tell you they have the answer. It is important to be careful who you allow to speak into your life. No leader, pastor, preacher, or teacher is perfect, but we must be careful who we listen to. We need solid biblical teaching.
When we address leaders, we are speaking to Pastors, teachers, evangelists, preachers, deacons, advisors, and anyone else in some sort of spiritual leadership in the Church. Leaders need to be in tune with God through the Holy Spirit.
Leaders you must have a good, frequent, and regular devotion time with God in prayer and in the scriptures. It is your job to prepare the people in your care to do what God has called them to do. That is your main purpose. Let’s read a familiar passage of scripture, Ephesians 4:11-12.
(11) So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, (12) to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
Leaders, you are a gift to the people so you can teach them, equip them, help them, and encourage them to use the gifts God has given them to answer the call he has on their lives. Fellow leaders, that means you have work to do. You cannot just get by. You cannot do “just enough”. You must give your all. You must do your best. You must be leading by example and teaching and preaching with conviction.
Leaders, you must be teaching truth from the scriptures, through the Holy Spirit. You must be asking God to reveal to you the meaning of each and every verse. Ask him to give you the correct context for each and every verse so you can effectively share it with those he has given you charge over. Do not rely on your own intelligence, logic, or understanding. Rely on the Holy Spirit. He will make it real to you, so you can make it real to others.
Leaders, it is you who must emphasize the need for truth and share it with those who look to you for guidance.
People, you are the saints. You are the body of Christ in the world today. You have work to do. You must accept the leadership the Lord has put in place. You must also be in tune with God through the Holy Spirit. God has created each and every one of you with a plan and purpose. These plans and purposes all fit together to achieve God’s ultimate purpose which is reconciliation between man and God.
You cannot achieve that without regular time in prayer and in the scriptures. You must search out God’s truths and be ready to share with anyone and everyone you meet as the opportunities arise. You must be a living testimony of the love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness of God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
You must submit yourself to the commandments of God. These are simple and Jesus sums them up. Love the Lord your God with your whole heart, soul, and mind, and love your neighbor as you love yourself. Jesus tells us that all of the law of Moses and all the teachings of the prophets over the centuries hang on these two things.
King Solomon is recorded in Ecclesiastes 12:13 saying:
(13) Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.
That’s our whole job everyone. We are to keep God’s commands and fear or respect him as sovereign.
There is another part that is very important though, and this ties these two points together.
The writer of Hebrews tells us in Hebrews 10:24-25:
(24) And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, (25) not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
The Church is the body of Christ. We are not a large number of individuals with similar beliefs doing our own thing. We are one body and one Church, regardless of the denomination. We cannot do what God has called us to do alone. Even the great Apostle Paul was surrounded by other believers who could encourage him, help him, and work alongside him. More so, even Jesus brought some of the disciples with him as he went to pray just before he was arrested and crucified.
We must all understand the need for truth in the world today and be ready to share it.
Friends, we cannot isolate ourselves. Leaders, we cannot isolate ourselves. We need each other and we need to encourage one another, teach one another, love one another, and hold one another accountable. We must be of one mind, that of Christ Jesus.
The result of this is found back in our original verse in Proverbs. Peace and fulfillment will only come through solid biblical teaching and preaching and individual devotion in prayer and reading scripture.
Leaders, seek a fresh revelation from God each and every day and share that with those the Lord has entrusted to you. Saints, listen to the teaching and preaching of your leaders and put what God has taught you into practice. Everyone, continue to seek the Lord regularly with fervor and serve him by being his hands and feet in this lost and dying world. By doing these things we will fill the need for truth in the world today.
