Introduction

There is so much going on around the world. The Covid pandemic is continuing to be at the forefront of everyone’s mind but there are other things. Continued hunger, droughts, wildfires, extreme heat, ongoing wars, and more continue to go on.

With everything going on in the world it is easy to become hopeless and want to give up. Today we would like to talk about hope. We want to explore some verses that we can get encouragement from when we are facing difficult times.

Finding Hope In God’s Plan

Sometimes our circumstances cause us to lose hope while other times it is an inner feeling of hopelessness. No matter what the cause of this hopelessness is, we can be assured that we can find hope in Jesus Christ.

We can be filled with confident expectation. When we have made Jesus Lord of our life then we do not need to feel hopeless. Sure, our situation can seem hopeless but we can choose to trust in the promises of God and believe that he has the best intentions in mind for us.

Listen to this verse about hope:

Jeremiah 29:11

(11)  For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

God only has good plans for you. You may not understand where your life is going right now or why you are on the road you are on, but God knows. He only wants to prosper you and give you hope and a future. This prosperity may not be financial, but you will be fulfilled in all you do as you seek His plan for you. Trust him, he’s got your back.

Finding Hope While Working

Sometimes we lose faith when we are working hard. We are doing everything right and answering the call God has on our lives but we are not seeing any fruit. It is easy to feel discouraged when we are doing all we can and know we are doing exactly what God has asked us to do but with no results.

Take heart! God sees what you are doing and he knows your intentions.

1 Corinthians 15:58

(58)  Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

May you be encouraged to keep doing what you are doing; standing firm in the grace the Lord has given you. Whatever you are doing, know that you are not doing it for man but for God. Your labor is not in vain. Have hope that the God who commissioned you is faithful to carry out His will in your life.

Finding Hope In Our Sorrow

No matter what you are going through or what you feel, you can bring your thoughts, emotions, and requests to God. He is not surprised by what you are going through. He is just waiting for you to turn it all over to him and accept his plan for you.

King David often lamented to the Lord and then praised him. That’s what much of the psalms is. King David pouring out his heart in times of sorrow and times of joy. One such passage is found in Psalms 3:3-6 and is when King David is fleeing from his son Absalom.

Psalms 3:3-6

(3)  But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.  (4)  I call out to the LORD, and he answers me from his holy mountain.  (5)  I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me.  (6)  I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side.

There are times when we feel hopeless because our world is raging around us. Know that God is your shield. He is the one who protects and defends you. By his glory, He will hold your head high so you can have the confidence to face whatever comes your way. He hears your cries. He sees your tears. God hears your prayers.

Finding Hope In Jesus

Have faith that Jesus cares about you, loves you, and gives you hope. Faith is the present possession of grace; hope is confidence in grace’s future accomplishment. Our hope isn’t sourced in this world. It doesn’t fade or perish. Listen to 1 Peter 1:3-4:

1 Peter 1:3-4

(3)  Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,  (4)  and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,

Because of Jesus, we have hope in new life! Because of Jesus’ resurrection, we have an inheritance in heaven! Our hope is not anything that can be stripped away, expire, or disappear. This hope is not of this world. This hope only comes from knowing Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. We have hope! We have hope in Jesus!

Finding Hope In Eternity

Many people find they need the most hope when they are reaching the end of their natural life. As followers of Jesus Christ, there is no need to fear this or lose hope over it. When we pass from this life and into the next, we have hope of eternity with God. Look at Psalms 16:9-10.

Psalms 16:9-10

(9)  Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,  (10)  because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.

We have hope of heaven and we have hope of eternity. Jesus told the thief hanging on the cross next to him that he would join him that day in Heaven. Knowing that this natural life on earth is only temporary can bring so much hope. We only have 75 or so years of this life to endure before we are with God in Heaven forever!

Conclusion

Friends, if you are without hope today, may you find hope in Jesus Christ who took the punishment of sin upon himself so that you can have eternal life through the forgiveness of sins. Hope is what mankind needs. Hope is the medicine for the soul. It is this hope that must resonate in our hearts and overflow onto the lives of others. The world needs hope and we can share this hope with them.
