Resurrection Sunday (Easter)

It is sunrise on Easter morning. I cannot help but imagine that morning almost 2000 years ago when Jesus’ followers woke up and went to the tomb. The passage of scripture I am referring to is Luke 24:1-8. If you missed part 1 of this blog, Good Friday, I suggest you take a moment and read that. Jesus’ work did not end on the cross. His purpose had not been completely fulfilled. Yes, He was sacrificed, but He had not beaten death, yet.

Jesus said that He would tear down the temple and rebuild it in three days. He did not speak of the physical temple, but of His body. He had to beat death, and He did! I love the words of the angel as some of His followers approached and saw the stone rolled away from the tomb. “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is risen!” It is so beautiful!

In Good Friday I asked a few questions but did not answer them all. What was the result of His actions? That question could not be answered until He rose from death on the third day. Jesus’ resurrection is the completion of His work. He accomplished all He came to do. He not only died on the Roman cross to pay the price once and for all for all of our sins, mine and yours, for all eternity, but He beat death. He took the keys of Hell from Satan so that we would not have to endure that.

You see friend, Jesus’ resurrection brings us hope; hope that no matter what pulls us down, we can rise again. No matter what seemingly insurmountable obstacles we face, we will overcome. That is the hope that you see in every true believer’s face. That is the hope that flows out of every believer’s heart to those around him or her. Jesus’ resurrection shows us that God does not turn His back forever and His power is greater than anything.

We also need to know and believe that without Jesus’ resurrection we could not have a relationship with Him today. I have lost people I love over the years to physical death. I can only go to their graves or other places that remind me of them to mourn and reminisce. However, Jesus has risen! Jesus is alive! Jesus wants a relationship with you. He wants to walk with you and talk with you. He wants to lead you. He wants to be the shepherd of Psalm 23 to you. Because He was raised from the dead and is alive today, we can talk to Him (pray). We can spend time with Him. We can feel His presence.

Don’t allow Jesus’s sacrifice, and subsequent triumph over death, go unnoticed. Maybe you are reading this and have never said yes to Jesus. Jesus is calling you. He is saying, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Won’t you answer, “Yes!” to Jesus? Easter morning is not about eggs, bunnies, or candy. There is nothing wrong with those, but Jesus is the reason for Resurrection Sunday (Easter). He stands at the door and knocks. Whoever opens the door and allows Him in will be forever changed for God’s glory and will realize the forgiveness, grace, love, and hope that come from a loving God through a selfless Son.
